Integrated Humanitarian Aid (IHA) is celebrating the remarkable growth of Sarah Achol, the first child to benefit from their care. Sarah lost her mother shortly after birth in early 2023 and was initially cared for by MSF before IHA took over her case in June. At just six months old, Sarah has been nourished with NIDO milk powder and has recently started semi-solid foods.

This challenging case, referred by UNICEF’s Susan Bahman, pushed IHA’s capacity as a new child protection partner. With support from UNICEF and local stakeholders in Abyei, Sarah was transferred to a more responsible foster parent, Ayen Chan, who now lovingly cares for her. IHA recognizes the critical need for fostering services in conflict zones like Abyei, where many children are displaced from their families.

Ayen Chan, the foster mother of Achol, shares that the baby’s health has significantly improved over the past year. Achol no longer falls sick frequently and is now able to walk, run, and even help with small tasks at home. She recognizes her siblings and sometimes calls them by name. Ayen expresses deep gratitude for the support they’ve received from humanitarian organizations in Abyei, especially the International Humanitarian Actors (IHA), who have provided essential services and maintained regular contact with the family.

Over the past year, the “Comprehensive Child Protection and Gender-Based Violence Program in Abyei and Ruweng Administrative Areas,” funded by UNICEF, has made a significant impact. More than 130 vulnerable children have been enrolled in case management by IHA, with child protection messages reaching over 1,300 people in the region.

The project has successfully reunified 13 children separated from their families due to conflict, including 10 returnees who fled the ongoing conflict in Sudan. Additionally, over 500 individuals have received Explosive Ordinance risk education in Abiemnom and Pariang counties, where a landmine in Abiemnom was safely detonated with the assistance of UNMISS and local stakeholders.
